Two out of two for Kara!
28 Oct: The new look, concentrating, Kara Mayos (Spa) did the double for October test sets. No sooner had she stormed to the top of the table for the 2x800m Freestyle test last week, than she was back kicking her way to equal the 2nd fastest average that we've had on the 4x400m kick! Exactly 1 year ago, Lauren Jarvis (Arm) set the fastest ever average time of 6:25. Tilly Arrand (Arm) got close to beating it on her last attempt before moving in to Phase 5 in July, and now Kara has matched Tilly's best attempt. The fastest individual rep, until today, was Lauren's 6:18 - kara lowered that to 6:15 and looks set to smash the record average next time!
It was an evening for the girls to show big improvement. 3rd and 4th fastest on the day were Callie Ramshaw (Ros) and Lauren Christmas (Arm). Callie demonstrating that determination conquers all by dropping 24sec on her previous best average. She also managed to squeeze under 7min for the first time on rep 1 and repeated it on rep 4. Lauren just missed dipping her toes under 7min on a few reps. A great job by both.
Prize for determined effort of the day though, goes to Harvey Williamson (Arm). He hates kick, everyone knows that, but after a pre-training camp pizza with the younger element heading for Torremolinos at the end of the week, Harvey managed to knock a full minute off his previous best average. 7:17 is very respectable, especially considering he did much of it on his least favoured Fly kick!
And there's a lesson for the less experienced at this test. Fly kick is generally fastest, followed by Backstroke kick. If you want to get down to the sub-7min times, it's very unlikely to happen while doing Breaststroke!
The cut-off time is 10min, which works out at around 37sec per length. You'll need to go 10sec faster each length to get close to 7min, which is where most should be aiming. To challenge the record: 24sec per length is required. Set your training goals accordingly!

First test set of the season
22 Oct: The first Phase 4 test set of the season was worth waiting for. Big improvements from many including a 20sec leap by Kara Mayos (Spa) for the fastest times and fastest average of the day. We're 10sec off the squad record set by Simon Kliment (Arm) a few weeks prior to his move to Phase 5, but a 40sec improvement for Gillian Clarke (Arm) and 20sec jumps by Taylor Hardy (Adw) and Lucy Pickard (Ros) suggest his standard might be challenged by the girls before long.
As usual, down the bottom of the table we have the newbies in the squad. The bottom 4 were all attempting the challenge for the first time and did pretty good. Usually the 2nd attempt at these 2x800m sprints drops huge chunks from the first time. Expect to see those 4 creeping up the table over the next few months.
